A real apples-to-apples comparison of fuel cost-per-mile and 5-year total ownership cost across battery electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), traditional hybrid (HEV), and gas (ICE) vehicles — using US-average electricity and gas prices.
The short answer
For drivers who can charge at home, a battery EV is the cheapest to fuel — typically 4–5¢ per mile versus 6–9¢ for a hybrid and 11–18¢ for a comparable gas vehicle. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) lands in between: cheap when driven inside its electric-only range, hybrid-priced beyond it. Traditional hybrids (HEV) are the best option for drivers without reliable home charging.

When a hybrid actually beats an EV
- No home charging. If every kWh comes from DC fast charging at $0.40–$0.55/kWh, BEV cost-per-mile jumps to 10–14¢ — within range of a 50+ MPG hybrid.
- Very long road-trip mileage. Drivers averaging 25,000+ miles/yr with heavy interstate use spend more time at Superchargers; an HEV's gas-pump pit stops can be faster overall.

PHEV economics depend on plugging in
A plug-in hybrid is only as efficient as your habits. With a 40-mile all-electric range, a driver who charges nightly and commutes 30 miles a day burns almost no gas — closing in on BEV economics. A driver who never plugs in operates the car as a heavier, more expensive HEV. EPA telematics studies suggest the average US PHEV runs on electricity for about 55% of its miles, which is what we use above.
Maintenance and total cost of ownership
On top of fuel, EVs save roughly $600–$800/year in maintenance versus comparable gas vehicles (no oil changes, fewer brake jobs from regen, no exhaust system). Hybrids share most of an ICE car's service schedule and only modestly reduce brake wear. Over 5 years, the EV maintenance advantage typically adds another $3,000–$4,000 on top of the fuel savings shown above.
