How the estimate works
We start from the EPA combined range and apply derating factors. Aerodynamic drag scales with the square of speed, so a 65 mph cruise returns about 90% of EPA range and 75 mph about 75%. Cold weather costs roughly 0.45% of range per degree below 60°F with a heat pump and 0.7% with resistive heating. Heavy HVAC use, mountain grades, aggressive acceleration, extra weight, and roof racks each apply their own penalty.
